The Dawnchaser story starts with two blokes, a camp fire and a few too many drinks (again).
After another night of dodging power cables, searching for dimmer switches and stumbling to our swags in the dark (and a little drunk) after switching off the lights, our founders Sam and Brett realised there’s got to be a better way to light up a campsite.
“How much easier would it be if these things had batteries and Bluetooth, and we could just control the lights from our phone?”, was the “lightbulb” moment (no pun intended). “We carry them around with us all the time anyway.”
With that revelation in mind, we sat down and started to think seriously about how we could do it.
After a couple of months of back-and-forth, we’d put all our ideas on paper. We knew we needed some serious firepower to help us bring it to life, so we made a phone call to our mates at Design & Industry, which is one of the best design firms in Australia and where several staff are keen campers themselves. Next thing you know, we’re sitting in their office in Melbourne working out exactly how we could make this happen.
12 months later and with our life savings sunk into the project (“burning the boats”, as we call it), our ideas finally came to life. As we admired the final prototypes sitting on the table, watching them respond as we played with the controls on our phones, we realised that we’d made something pretty special.
We hope you enjoy using our lights as much as we enjoyed creating them.
Cheers,
Sam & Brett.
